The serpentine belt is located on the front of the engine block and winds around several pulleys driving various engine components: water, fuel and power steering pumps, the alternator, air conditioner compressor and possibly other accessories. It's about 90 bucks, so before I spend the money I thought I'd see if you guys would do the same. Take the belt off the pulley and let it hang. The indicator light works because when the 4wd works, the light is on, but when the 4wd doesn't engage, the light is off, as it should. It worked all last year, and this winter it started doing this.

This must be done correctly. Use a socket wrench with a matching socket the same size as the hex head bolt in the center of the tension pulley. This happened to me once. With the electric actuator it's almost instantaneous. This pulley is attached to a very strong spring and holds the belt tight against the pulleys through its serpentine route around the engine. The lever moves into gear just fine, and when I put it into 4low the rear wheels do go into 4 wheel. The new belt will need more clearance to get on the pulley.

Maximum tongue weight 1000 lbs. Trouble loading the menu due to slow internet connection. The guys at the part store thought it may be the actuator. I'm trying to remember way back when the actuator went bad on my '95. I do believe that the 4x4 light would not come on when the actuator was bad. I got tired of waiting for the gas in the thermal actuator to get hot enough to extend the plunger to engage the diff. The additional weight must be subtracted from the maximum tow rating.
